Sidley Austin LLP

Clivner's high-profile move to Sidley Austin in May 2015 followed 17 years as a game-changing mergers and acquisitions lawyer at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP.

His experience in the 15 months since has been "exceeding my expectations," Clivner said.

Since joining Sidley, Clivner has advised clients on $15 billion in transactions while overseeing huge growth as co-managing partner of the firm's Los Angeles operations and co-head of its private equity practice. He led the opening of the firm's Century City office, which has grown to 24 lawyers, and he oversaw the expansion of the firm's LA summer associate program from eight last year to 22 this year.

"That's been a big job, and very rewarding as we've built up Century City and added real terrific talent from across Los Angeles," Clivner said.

And it hasn't slowed the transaction work for which he's well known.

At Sidley, Clivner represented Siris Capital Management LLC, in an acquisition of collaboration software provider Premiere Global Services Inc. worth approximately $1 billion. He represented Lagunitas Brewing Company as it sold half to Heineken Holding N.V. in Amsterdam, closing a deal in three months that included complex antitrust, governance and corporate law issues. He also handled Health Net Inc.'s merger with Centene Corp., serving as special counsel to its board of directors regarding the approximately $6.8 billion transaction, and he represented IPC Healthcare in its $1.6 billion acquisition of TeamHealth Inc.

"It's resonating with clients, which is very important," Clivner said of the firm's work. "We get new opportunities all the time, so I'm confident it will continue."

Clivner's leadership extends outside the firm. He chaired the board of directors for pro bono law firm Public Counsel last year, overseeing the hire of CEO and president Margaret Morrow. He's also worked to increase diversity at Sidley and is helping launch a professional development series for LGBT associates.
