Richmond is perhaps best known for securing a record-setting $940 million verdict, the biggest trade secrets verdict in Wisconsin history and the second largest in United States history.
The case consisted of health care software documents owned by Epic Systems Corp. that were lifted by Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. The software was outsourced to TCS to perform tests on the product. Such a case highlighted the risks of doing business in countries with different laws and legal culture, Richmond said. "You just lose some control," Richmond said. Epic Systems Corp. v. Tata Consultancy Services Ltd., 14-CV00748 (W.D. Wis., filed Oct. 31, 2014).
He's also taken on cases outside of his wheelhouse, like litigating against Gov. Jerry Brown for misappropriating money designated for a special fund to help struggling homeowners in order to satisfy a shortfall in the state budget. National Asian American Coalition v. Brown, 34-2014-80001784.
Richmond sued on behalf of three California nonprofits. A state court declared that the over $331 million in the fund was unlawfully diverted. The state was enjoined to pay the money back to homeowners.
"Our governor just felt free to reach his hand into the cookie jar of that special fund to take out that money to use it any way he wished without any regard for the special purposes it was supposed to be used," Richmond said. "That isn't right."
Richmond has tried two dozen cases and argued nearly 20 appeals. "I love trial work. I love the strategic part of litigation. More than anything I love to be in trial, examining the witness, helping the jury understand the issues and the facts and persuading clients' point of view," he said.
