This Thanksgiving Friday we have an encore presentation of two segments aired earlier this fall, one regarding a new analytics website synthesizing and predicting California Supreme Court behavior, and another chatting with the editor of a recent book on the life and legacy of Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
Kirk Jenkins, of Sedgwick LLP, will visit to discuss his work on the California Supreme Court Review, a new Sedgwick blog synthesizing data from a vast store of California Supreme Court rulings. The blog, begun earlier this year, looks at items of information from 16 years of high court opinions in order to parse trends, and potentially to predict outcomes. The blog has, thus far, analyzed things such as geographic and area of law origins for Cal. Supreme Court petition grants, and affirmance and reversal rates for several of the state's appellate districts. Mr. Jenkins will discuss why quantitative analysis is useful for appellate attorneys and what is in store for his firm's new site.
Then, Scott Dodson, professor of law at UC Hastings, will chat about his recent book on one of the court's longest-tenured and most-revered members, Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Dodson edited and contributed to the book, which features essays from noted legal minds and correspondents, including Nina Totenberg, Dahlia Lithwick, and Neil and Reva Siegal, and which is the first comprehensive treatment of Ginsburg's life and legacy. The book, with both personal anecdotes and doctrinal analysis, explains the outsize impact Ginsburg has made upon constitutional law, particularly in areas of equal protection analysis and gender equality, as well as civil procedure and federal court jurisdiction. <!-- Weekly Appellate Report Podcast -->
