As firm co-chair of the Public Pension and Investments Group at Nossaman LLP, Dunning represents some of the state's largest public retirement systems on both administration and investment matters.
"I help my clients work through the maze of legal issues and do so in a way that withstands legal and public scrutiny," Dunning said.
Dunning argued on behalf of the Marin County Employees' Retirement Association against various county employee unions before the 1st District Court of Appeal this month. Marin Association of Public Employees et al. v. Marin County Employees' Retirement Association (Cal. App. 1st Dist., filed Aug. 23, 2013).
The case asks the 1st District to determine whether the California Public Employees' Pension Reform Act of 2013, and MCERA's implementation of it, violated current employees' vested rights by excluding certain future pay items from the calculation of their retirement benefits.
Dunning also leads Nossaman's Women's Affinity Group, which is part of the firm's diversity committee.
The group's primary goal is to support the recruitment, retention and promotion of women professionals, both lawyers and non-lawyers, at the firm.
"There are still some basic challenges that women face that leave them in a situation of opting out and stepping back," Dunning said. "People need to talk about their successes and challenging moments."
