Robins Kaplan LLP

Silberfeld has been practicing for more than 40 years and specializes in business litigation with some of his earlier cases revolving around asbestos, breast implants and other mass tort litigation.

More recently, he's been going to bat for Best Buy Co. Inc. winning several cases and settlements against a number of electronics manufacturers.

Last year, he handled a matter involving artificially increased prices of cathode ray tubes between 1997 and 2007. Silberfeld helped win a settlement for Best Buy last August in a case against Hitachi. In re Cathode Ray Tube Antitrust Litigation, 3:07-cv-05944 (N.D. Cal. 2016).

Similar victories came through against the likes of Panasonic Corp. and LG Electronics Inc.

One of his landmark achievements secured a $400 million settlement across several cases representing the major electronics retailer chain.

In one example, he took on LCD flat-panel manufacturer Toshiba, accusing the company of fixing the devices' prices and overcharging Best Buy for their wares. In re TFT-LCD (Flat Panel) Antitrust Litigation, 3:07-md-01827 (N.D. Cal. June 6, 2016).

Silberfeld said about 10 of the world's largest tech manufacturers were responsible for doing the same. "This was a worldwide conspiracy," he said.

Silberfeld describes his field as "complex business litigation" but making things simpler is what's kept him at it.

"To me, what gets me up every morning and excited about going to work is the challenge of taking this very complicated mass of information and presenting it not only in a simple, straightforward way, but one that is compelling and persuasive," he said.

Silberfeld also brought the bankruptcy of the for-profit Corinthian Colleges to Robins Kaplan's attention. He and the firm are advocating for the half a million students who were enrolled in the schools that closed last year. In a rare move, they earned approval from the U.S. Trustee Program to form a committee of students to have a voice in the bankruptcy case discussion.

Robins Kaplan was appointed special litigation counsel to the Corinthian Colleges Student Creditor Trust and replaced a previous bankruptcy plan with one that created a fund for impacted students. In re Corinthian Colleges, 1:15-bk-10952 (Bankr. D. Del., filed May 4, 2015).
