Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP

Los Angeles

Practice type: Litigation

Specialty: Complex civil, legal malpractice, criminal law

Brian handles some of corporate America's biggest and nastiest disputes. Recently, he has led the trial team for bond investment company DoubleLine Capital LP and its founder, Jeffrey E. Gundlach, in a case potentially worth more than half a billion dollars. Gundlach's former employer, Trust Co. of the West, accused him of stealing trade secrets while Gundlach, who has countersued, alleges TCW fired him in order to avoid pay him lucrative performance fees.

Other matters on Brian's plate include serving as lead counsel for offshore drilling company Transocean in the federal investigation related to BP's April 2010 oil rig explosion that led to the worst oil spill in U.S. history. Brian also serves as co-counsel in the federal multidistrict litigation pending in New Orleans and the U.S. Coast Guard hearings that have taken place as well.

Discussing his work ethos, Brian said trial strategy and storytelling are among his favorite parts of the job.

"I like standing in front of a jury, telling a story," he said.

Other clients include Northrop Grumman, Boeing, Archer Daniels Midland, Allstate Insurance Co., KB Homes and Costco. This year, he was hired as lead trial counsel for LG Display, involved in a San Francisco-based class action alleging price fixing. He's helping MGM resorts and its outside directors fight derivative lawsuits and class actions stemming from the construction of the City Center project, whose cost is estimated to be in the billions.
