Dewey & LeBoeuf LLP

East Palo Alto

Practice type: Corporate

Specialty: Mergers and acquisitions

Flaum's team anticipates so much work that it's hiring lawyers - something that a lot of practice groups in the legal industry can't imagine doing right now, given the economic climate.

He counts among his most active clients San Jose-based online retailer eBay Inc. and Santa Clara-based Applied Materials Inc., which provides equipment, services and software to manufacturers of semiconductor, flat-panel display and solar photovoltaic products.

Flaum is representing Applied Materials in its $4.9 billion acquisition announced in May of Varian Semiconductor Equipment Associates Inc. of Gloucester, Mass. The transaction is expected to close later this year.

Flaum also represents eBay in the company's acquisition of additional shares of Istanbul-based GittiGidiyor, a Turkish online marketplace. In June, he helped eBay acquire e-commerce and interactive marketing services company GSI Commerce Inc. for $2.4 billion and the German online shopping club brands4friends for $200 million.

As part of the GSI Commerce deal, Flaum negotiated the sale of pieces of GSI back to its founders.

"What I love is a terrific variety of deals," he said.
