The Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund hosted its 2011 Los Angeles Awards Gala on Monday at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. The event paid tribute to Antonia Hernandez, president & CEO of the California Community Foundation and former president and general counsel of MALDEF; Roland Palencia, LGBT community activist; and Linda Ronstadt, Grammy Award-winning recording artist and activist; for their work and achievements in the Latino community, civil rights and the arts. Hernandez received the Valerie Kantor award for extraordinary achievement; Palencia accepted the award for excellence in community service award; and Ronstadt received the lifetime achievement, leadership in the arts award. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa made an appearance at the event to deliver remarks to the attendees. Presenters included actress Eva Longoria and singer Pepe Aguilar. — Connie Lopez
