Antitrust, complex commercial litigation
Davis Polk made a rare lateral hire in 2008 when it lured Hockett from Bingham McCutchen. Since then, Hockett has managed a bustling litigation practice that last year included getting a subprime-related shareholder class action lawsuit against PricewaterhouseCoopers dismissed in U.S. District Court for the Northern District. He then successfully defended T-Mobile USA Inc. in a series of state and federal class actions, including one regarding early termination fees for which T-Mobile paid an unusually low settlement amount.
He's currently leading the defense of LG Corp., one of a handful of defendants in federal proceedings that unite more than 30 nationwide class actions alleging a global price-fixing conspiracy in the market for optical disk drives. His reputation is such that he was the only American lawyer in a small group of international lawyers invited by the Chinese Ministry of Commerce this year to provide advice on the nation's potential new merger guidelines.
