Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe | San Francisco

As Orrick's chairman and CEO since 1990, he has taken what was once a group of San Francisco bond lawyers and transformed it into a global law firm. Touting a mantra of growth, the firm now has more than 1,000 lawyers in 18 offices in seven countries. Two years ago, he guided his firm through a merger with French law firm Rambaud Martel, thus doubling its number of lawyers in Paris and strengthening its corporate practice there. The firm also opened in Beijing and Shanghai that year, following entrances in 2005 into Hong Kong, Taipei and Moscow. While other firms have sloughed off or suffered attrition, he's played the bull, bringing on more than 25 laterals since January, with 13 in California alone.
