Girardi made his name - and a lot of money - racking up verdicts and settlements with stunning numbers. The most celebrated of these was the $334 million settlement with PG&E over groundwater contamination that was detailed in the movie "Erin Brockovich." He also secured a $68 million settlement with Pfizer over claims involving the drug Rezulin.
Girardi has been unafraid to wield his influence outside of the courtroom, too - on behalf of Democratic candidates and causes, the judiciary and charitable organizations. He is a major benefactor of Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, his alma mater.
Now, as a member of the Judicial Council, Girardi has been eager to flex his muscles in Sacramento on behalf of the courts.
"To succeed, a firm must be persuasive," he said, paraphrasing a quote from deceased journalist Edward R. Murrow. "To be persuasive, you must be credible. To be credible, you must tell the truth."
