When 40-year-old Timothy Atkins walked out of jail a free man this year after two decades behind bars, Brooks and his team of lawyers and law students at the Innocence Project celebrated their fifth exoneration since the program at Western University School of Law began in 2000. Atkins' case shed light on the difficulty of exonerating the innocent without DNA evidence.
