During his tenure as managing partner, Doran has overseen the growth of Gibson Dunn in key cities such as Washington, D.C. and New York while maintaining the allegiance of attorneys in the firm's Los Angeles home base. When the firm does lose a partner, the most likely destination is not another firm but the federal government. And even those partners eventually come back, like former head of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency Robert Bonner did in 2006.
