California Supreme Court justice stops by Loyola Law

California Supreme Court associate justice Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar fielded an hour’s worth of lunchtime questions on Tuesday with Loyola Law School, Los Angeles dean Michael Waterstone during a standing-room-only event at the school’s downtown Robinson Courtroom.

Cuéllar described the case review process during the Q&A along with his own work-life balance and how to craft opinions that matter. He also responded to a student who asked about advice the associate justice would give undocumented students interested in pursuing law.

“The image never left me of growing up looking at the border” between U.S. and Mexico, Cuéllar said, adding that an undocumented student would be well-suited to a legal career. “The complexity of the border and what it represents is everywhere.”
