Kleinberg Lange Cuddy & Carlo LLP

Candace Carlo

Carlo began her career handling financing deals for major motion picture studios Columbia and TriStar, but she eventually pivoted into legal work for talent.

Now at Kleinberg Lang, where she's a name partner, her practice spans financing, rights deals, talent, distribution and employment agreements for clients in the film, television, music and video game industries.

"All we do is transactional entertainment work. We're a small group of people - we have six lawyers - but we represent people like J.K. Rowling, George R.R. Martin, Gene Simmons and the Rolling Stones for motion picture work, Hans Zimmer. One of my clients is the No. 1 star of Spanish language television, Ana María Polo," she said. "It's just a really lovely group of people who have a great legal practice."

In addition to representing Polo and Academy Award- and Golden Globe-winning composer Zimmer, Carlo's clients include Academy Award-winning writer and director Brenda Chapman and composer Heitor Pereira.

For longtime client Zimmer, she handles his creative and business activities, including his composer deals for the highly anticipated films, "No Time to Die," "Wonder Woman 2" and "Dune." She is negotiating his European concert tour set for 2021, and advises his music production and publishing business, 14th Street Music.

Carlo recently represented Chapman in directing her first live action film "Come Away," which premiered at Sundance 2020.

Carlo also oversaw the financing, production and distribution of Dream Factory Group's first film, "Luce." The film debuted at Sundance 2019 and was nominated for multiple Independent Spirit Awards.

"I represented the financiers and producers, and just did everything on the film," she said. "It was enormously satisfying and fun, because I was there every step of the way."

Gratified to work with thought-provoking and artistic projects, Carlo gives back to the community by providing pro bono legal services for public interest documentary films. She recently worked on the soundtrack for Ron Howard's new documentary "Rebuilding Paradise," and contributed legal services for Prince Harry's charity projects "Harry's Arctic Heroes" and "Harry's Mountain Heroes."

She is also a founding board member of The Civics Center, a nonpartisan organization that promotes voter registration and provides online civics education.
