(39) Nixon Peabody LLP

LOS ANGELES - Jade E. Turner-Bond is a partner in Nixon Peabody LLP's project finance and public finance group, where she represents clients financing and refinancing infrastructure and capital improvements projects for state and local government entities.

She serves as bond counsel, disclosure counsel and underwriter's counsel on a range of tax-exempt debt types and structures and related instruments.

She is the chair of the Securities Law Editorial Board for the National Association of Bond Lawyers. She is the chair of Nixon Peabody's Black Resource Group and a founding host of the firm's podcast, "To Live and Law in LA."

Family ties brought her into the law. "My father is a criminal defense attorney," Turner-Bond said in an email interview. "At an early age, I saw how passionate he is about the legal field. Around junior high school, I also became involved in peer court, where I took on a defense role. In law school, I was fortunate to have a great mentor who was a woman attorney working in public finance. Her insights on how the sector allows you to work on projects that really help people--alongside great public sector clients--really resonated with me."

Before joining Nixon Peabody in 2014, Turner-Bond worked as legal counsel at the California State Treasurer's Office. "You often see attorneys going from big law to in-house, but you do not always see those in in-house moving over to big law like I did," she said.

"Through my experience at the treasurer's office, I have a deeper understanding of my clients' needs, everyday challenges and pressures, as well as the intricacies of how to get things done from within municipalities."

In January 2021, Turner-Bond and her team served as underwriter's counsel for the California Endowment for its $300 million social bonds offering. The project provided grant funding for key nonprofit organizations advancing social justice initiatives.

"This is an especially gratifying example of how my public finance work can make a direct positive impact on our communities," she said.

Turner-Bond also worked with the Los Angeles contemporary art museum The Broad as bond counsel and disclosure counsel in a $115.8 million state development bank revenue bond deal used to finance the museum. "This was very interesting and gratifying as an example of an opportunity to counsel and partner with a client who is also deeply committed to diversity, equity, inclusion and justice," she said.

In one of her podcast episodes, titled "Patrolling Skid Row," she featured an interview with a Los Angeles police officer on the beat.

"The conversation illustrates how good people in public service can have a profound positive impact on the lives of others," Turner-Bond said.
