Six judges from across the nation who represent diversity in the judiciary were honored by The National Judicial College with awards for Making the World a More Just Place.

The event took place in Beverly Hills on Jan. 19. Among the honored were Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Holly J. Fujie, who has held several leadership positions in the California legal community, and U.S. District Court Judge Sunshine S. Sykes of Riverside, one of the few Native American federal judges in the country. Sykes, who was born on the Navajo Nation Reservation in Tuba City, Arizona, is a national expert on the Indian Child Welfare Act.

The other honored judges were: Judge Michelle Childs of the U.S. Court of Appeal for the D.C. Circuit; Justice Serge Georges Jr. of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court; Justice Monica M. Marquez of the Colorado Supreme Court; and federal Judge Esther Salas of the District of New Jersey. The nation’s oldest, largest and most widely attended school for judges is celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2023.
