Turner Boyd

Jennifer Seraphine is a partner at the intellectual property litigation boutique Turner Boyd, having been with the firm for just over 10 years. She practices in patent, trademark and copyright litigation, representing clients in unique cases and involving cutting-edge technology.

One such case is Pebble Beach Company v. UMRO Realty Corp., 3:22-cv-03438 (N.D. Cal., filed June 10, 2022). Representing Pebble Beach in the unique trade dress case, Seraphine successfully enforced the company’s trademark over the iconic 7th hole of the Pebble Beach Golf Links. Allegedly, Umro prominently displayed images of the famous hole to advertise their realty offices and Seraphine pursued those allegations to attain a favorable settlement for Pebble Beach.

Seraphine serves as lead counsel for Vincent Systems GMBH, a German medical technology company that overcame the technical hurdle to invent tiny motors that could be placed in the fingers of prosthetic hands, allowing for freedom and precision of movement greater than conventional hand prosthetics, which have larger motors located in the palm area.

Seraphine previously triumphed in a case against Ossur Americas Inc., a much larger company in the industry, securing a favorable, confidential settlement after bringing claims of patent infringement. Vincent Systems GMBH v. Ossur Americas Inc., 8:19-cv-02157 (C.D. Cal., filed Nov. 8, 2019).

She is currently representing Vincent Systems in pending litigation against Fillauer Companies Inc., a rival prosthetics manufacturer, for selling a product that infringes on its finger-mimicking technology. Vincent Systems GMBH v. Fillauer Companies Inc., 1:23-cv-00002 (E.D. Tenn., filed Jan. 4, 2023).

“My general philosophy is that everything you do in a case should have a strategic purpose,” Seraphine said in an interview. She said at the start of each case she makes sure to determine the goal of the litigation to ensure time and resources are not wasted on issues that do not move her case forward.

Seraphine also attributes her success to being a “classic overthinker.” She asserts that quality helps when developing her strategic approaches, especially when ensuring the work she is doing is actually benefiting the overall goal of the case.
