Katherine A. Roberts had always envisioned a career in copyright and First Amendment law, leveraging her experience as a journalist. However, during her time as a summer associate, she found herself drawn to the labor and employment group at her first firm.
This decision was not only influenced by her compatibility with the attorneys, but also by her passion for litigating cases involving workplace dynamics and human relationships. Little did she know that this initial interest would shape her legal path for more than 15 years.
“I often tell summer associates and law students to try as many areas as possible and then go with your gut,” she said. “Work with people you like and trust.”
Today, as partner and co-chair of Sidley’s labor, employment and immigration group, Roberts stands as lead counsel for clients who were once the subjects of her research memos during her early days as a summer associate.
But what truly sets Roberts apart is her commitment to understanding not just her direct clients but also the individuals on the business side.
The advantage of having worked with witnesses multiple times cannot be overstated. Roberts’ experience enables her to anticipate their reactions in various situations, allowing her to provide strategic representation. Moreover, the trust and familiarity developed over time make it easier for witnesses to feel comfortable being represented by outside counsel. It is this level of trust that forms the foundation of Roberts’ client relationships.
When it comes to client service, Roberts said she understands the importance of prompt communication, keeping clients informed of progress and being a calming presence during legal matters.
Clients appreciate her ability to handle a wide range of legal issues, including wage and hour litigation, union matters, transactions, and advisory work. This versatility eliminates the need for clients to educate multiple lawyers about their business and operations.
More recently, Roberts has immersed herself in labor work within the theater industry. Her lifelong passion for theater has seamlessly merged with her legal practice as she immerses herself in the world of backstage union labor. She considers herself fortunate that her innate curiosity, which initially propelled her toward journalism, continues to serve her well in the field of law.
