Lisa Helfend Meyer is a founding partner at the female-owned law firm Meyer, Olson, Lowy & Meyers, LLP. With four decades of experience in family law, she is certified as a Certified Family Law Specialist and has earned a national reputation as an expert in complex custody and financial matters.
She is often quoted as a legal expert by media outlets such as the Associated Press, Los Angeles Times, TODAY show, CNN, Court TV and Fox News.
While client confidentiality precludes her from mentioning specific cases, public records show that she has handled the recent marriage dissolutions of high-profile clients such as Nicole Young, Brandon Blackstock and Christina Ricci. Meyer also represented Brody Dalle and the woman who accused former Dodger pitcher Trevor Bauer of abuse.
Some of her recent notable cases include a guardianship case where the court terminated guardianship and her client, the mother, was reunited with her daughter. During the guardianship, the maternal grandmother maintained custody, Meyer said.
“The mother had worked diligently to improve her parenting in order to terminate the guardianship by going to counseling, taking parenting, consistently exercise her time with her daughter no matter what obstacles the grandmother put in place (e.g., insisting that she exercise visits in Northern CA only),” Meyer said. “We did the trial by Zoom during COVID and the Judge terminated the guardianship.”
In an international move away case, the mother was denied permission to relocate with her son, who was two months old at the time, to the UK and the court awarded the parents joint custody.
“Mother wanted to move back to the UK,” Meyer said. “Because of the age of the child, mother claiming that she breastfed and wouldn’t give the child a bottle, mother’s claims of substance abuse, the father didn’t initially have a lot of time. Father continued to go to Court to increase his time and the judge at trial ordered that if mother moved Father would have primary custody in L.A.”
Meyer also does her fair share of volunteer work and among her causes are The Harriett Buhai Center for Family Law, which assists low-income clients who are victims of domestic violence obtain restraining orders and The LevittQuinn Center, a nonprofit family law firm protecting children of families in crisis.
