Kayla K. Horacek

One of Kayla K. Horacek’s recent cases involved obtaining legal custody for a mother of a trans minor child in light of the father’s refusal to support the minor’s desire to fully transition.

“The orders allowed mother to help the minor child to address his gender dysphoria and mental health issues in a comprehensive way, without dad’s interference,” she said.

But before the success, Horacek acknowledged she had to educate herself as corporate ownership structures, and working with novel legal issues, such as the rights of a minor to express his/her/their gender identity.

“I have also learned to embrace unfamiliar legal territory and reach out to mentors to fill in any gaps in my knowledge,” Horacek said.

She is a Certified Family Law Specialist, a partner at Hahn & Hahn LLP and has 17 years of family law experience.

Horacek’s caseload encompasses transactional family issues, such as prenuptial agreements, and complex litigation involving support, property division, child custody and domestic violence.

A complex settlement involving a civil complaint filed against a community entity during a dissolution.

“In this case, a client’s medical practice was sued by a business partner regarding ownership interests, in the midst of that client’s divorce,” Horacek said. “I worked in conjunction with civil counsel for client to secure a favorable settlement for both the medical practice and the individual client.”

Looking to the near future, she said she recognizes the importance of using AI in legal writing and research.

“I believe that it can be a valuable tool for family law practitioners but that there can be no substitute for the personal care and attention that family law litigants need to get through this difficult process,” Horacek said.
