Product Liability
San Diego
Julie Hussey has developed a passion for defending product liability cases, a journey she began in 1999.
"I love learning about how things work and product liability cases always offer the opportunity to become an expert on a new product," she said.
Hussey is recognized as a leading strategist in complex, multi-jurisdictional product liability and catastrophic injury litigation. Her ascent in her career is attributed to her knack for turning high-stakes legal matters into victories, often setting precedents with her outcomes.
"Leading portfolios of multi-jurisdictional cases for cutting edge companies provides plenty of opportunities to be nimble and creative and I love it!" Hussey said
As a dedicated leader at Perkins Coie, Hussey also serves on the executive committee, contributing significantly to the firm's direction and success.
Under her leadership, Perkins Coie has taken on high-profile cases, including defending Uber in critical litigation across the United States. Her expertise was pivotal in a landmark case where Uber was absolved from product liability claims, as the California Superior Court ruled that the Uber app was not a product. This dismissal was upheld on appeal, marking a significant victory under her belt.
Hussey also co-leads the firm's relationship with Amazon, serving as the National Coordinating Counsel for Amazon's product liability litigation. Her role involves leading the defense of numerous product liability claims throughout the country, showcasing her extensive knowledge and strategic approach in the legal field. Hussey's career is a testament to her dedication, expertise and leadership in the realm of product liability defense.
When asked about trends in her field, Hussey said: "There seems to be an increase in irrational jury verdicts and attempts by plaintiffs' counsel to use those to make unjustified demands. Ultimately this often comes back to bite the plaintiffs because their lawyers roll the dice, and they get nothing."
