Employment Law
Los Angeles
Mahru Madjidi is an accomplished attorney with a decade of experience in employment law, specializing in cases of whistleblowing, wrongful termination, and discrimination, including FEHA, sexual harassment and other workplace injustices.
In 2023, Madjidi and her team of trial attorneys successfully recovered more than $57 million for clients.
She said one of her most memorable cases involved representing a single mother who endured two decades of racist treatment and was denied reasonable accommodations for her physical pain, leading to her wrongful termination and a subsequent panic attack.
"After her case resolved, I still remember the client telling me that she felt that for the first time in her life that she meant something in this world and that her voice had been heard," Madjidi said. "That always sticks with me and motivates me to help others feel the same."
In a different case, Contreras v. Kelly Pipe Co., LLC, she secured a $6.3 million verdict for a plaintiff in his 60s who faced age discrimination. The plaintiff, an IT director, was instrumental in developing the company's IT infrastructure but was unjustly fired and replaced by a younger employee he had trained.
"After the onset of the pandemic, he was fired and replaced by a far younger employee, who he had trained," Madjidi said. "It was incredibly rewarding to hear that the jury saw it the way Mr. Contreras did as well -- that he was fired for age discrimination."
She noted the defendant claimed to pin the firing on the pandemic, not ageism.
"One of the ways we proved this is by showing that firing Mr. Contreras actually hurt the company financially, because they ended up not only promoting his replacement and paying that person's salary, but also, they had to outsource many of Mr. Contreras' duties, making it more cost efficient to have kept him," Madjidi said. "In the other confidential matter above, many of the key witnesses were denying knowledge of the plaintiff's work restrictions altogether."
When asked about trends, she said she is very happy to see more protections under the law for survivors of sexual assault and sexual harassment.
"These protections range from longer statute of limitations periods to bring forth claims, to nullifying arbitration agreements at the election of the survivor," Madjidi said. "This also allows many survivors to come forward and fight for the justice they deserve when they otherwise would not be able to."
