Securities Fraud

San Diego

With a keen eye for detail and a deep understanding of securities fraud laws, Robbins Geller Rudman & Dowd LLP partner Jessica T. Shinnefield consistently delivers outstanding results for her clients. Her dedication to seeking justice and holding wrongdoers accountable has earned her a stellar reputation in the legal community.

Recently, Shinnefield worked on the second-largest securities class action settlement in the Middle District of Tennessee, underscoring the magnitude of the legal victory achieved by the team. The resolution of this case not only holds the defendants accountable for their deceptive actions but also serves as a deterrent to others who may contemplate engaging in similar fraudulent practices. Envision Healthcare Corp. Sec. Litig., 3:17-cv-01112 (M.D. Tenn. Sept. 22, 2023).

"This was one of the largest recoveries ever in that district," she said.

Envision Securities Class Action lawsuit in Tennessee, which resolved in March for $177.5 million, accused the defendants of making false and misleading statements about the nature, extent and sustainability of the company's "surprise billing" practices, which enabled Envision to bill patients at exorbitant out-of-network rates for medical treatment patients believed to be covered by their insurance.

Shinnefield credits her father in his role as a schoolteacher as her catalyst into her law career.

"I didn't really know anyone who was an attorney growing up. I came from a smaller town but our high school did have a mock trial team," she said. "My dad said give it a try. He was a teacher at the high school and told me to try it or do something different. So, I tried out for it and I made the team and I really, really liked it."

Her daughter is now a high school 9th grader and Shinnefield is volunteering to help coach the Mock Trial team at the school.

"When I introduced myself, I told them I have been in your shoes and it's actually helpful for them," she said. "When they're doing their first trial just reassuring them that it's okay to be nervous. I told them I still get nervous when I'm arguing and it doesn't mean that I'm not good or I'm not prepared, it means that you care about it and you want to do a good job."

Shinnefield is also credited with being on the team in obtaining a $1.025 billion recovery in the American Realty Capital Property Scandal as well as many other cases. Am. Realty Capital Props., Inc. Litig., Civil Action 1:15-mc-00040-AKH (S.D.N.Y. Jan. 18, 2022).
