In the epicenter of technological innovation, Gibson Dunn partner Cassandra Gaedt-Sheckter has established herself as an authority on artificial intelligence and privacy law.
As co-chair of the firm's global artificial intelligence practice, Gaedt-Sheckter has become an advisor to tech companies navigating the complex intersection of emerging technologies and evolving legal frameworks.
Over the past year, she has counseled more than 200 companies on data privacy and AI regulation issues. Her practice has evolved alongside the rapid advancement of technology.
"My practice has always been focused largely on technology companies, but as time went on, I really started to see the privacy world expanding," Gaedt-Sheckter explains. "In the last year and a half, we've seen a meteoric rise in issues surrounding AI, with clients ranging from shipping companies to AI tool developers seeking our advice."
Gaedt-Sheckter has also been at the forefront of AI and privacy law developments. "I've taken a leading role in advising on state privacy laws, heading our firm's task force on the subject, and co-chairing our AI practice group. Our practice in this area now spans compliance, transactional, and regulatory work across approximately 17 states with varying privacy laws," she elaborates, though she was a founding member of the AI practice group in 2018.
Gaedt-Sheckter is not only interpreting the law but also helping shape its future. Her work extends beyond corporate interests, contributing to efforts against cyberbullying and demonstrating AI's potential for societal benefit.
Offering her perpsective Gaedt-Sheckter states, "AI can provide extreme efficiency in certain ministerial tasks and assist in decision-making without being the decision-maker itself. It's a technology we've been utilizing and refining for quite some time, and the uses and sophistication just continue to expand."
