      GLENDALE - When Laura A. Matz took the bench for the first time in 1996, she felt as if she were about to embark on an uneasy adventure.
      "I remember looking out at a sea of faces and thinking these people knew more about what was about to happen then I did that day," Matz said recently, sitting in her Glendale chambers.
