LOS ANGELES - Judge Robert J. Perry took the blame for a jury's finding that could have significantly increased the sentence of a public transit officer convicted in the shooting death of a passenger. The instruction that led to the finding was confusing and incomplete, he concluded.

So he fixed it: He dismissed the finding at sentencing.
