SANTA ANA — Judge Melissa McCormick dealt in '90s tech during her civil practice days and still keeps one of the bygone era relics on her desk at home: a clunky hard drive that can house a whopping 40 megabytes.

It was 1999 and she was defending the maker of the drives against a British company that claimed the devices crashed its computers.
