SAN DIEGO - Growing up in Connecticut as one of seven siblings in a close-knit family, Bernard G. Skomal described himself as "the typical class clown" in his middle-school years.
But that all changed when he enrolled at a Jesuit preparatory school in Fairfield, Conn.
