LOS ANGELES - His father was a conservative Republican and his mother is a liberal Democrat, so as a boy, Robert B. Broadbelt III heard many familial debates about controversial political and social issues. In the 1960s and '70s, there were a lot of those.

Yet what Broadbelt, now a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge, remembers most about his parents' discussions is how civil they were.
