LOS ANGELES - Growing up in Michigan, Judge Shelly Torrealba would rise at 5 a.m. to milk the cows.

"I've been chased by bulls, saved from stalled tractors. ... I really am a small-town girl from nowhere," she said.

Now Torrealba presides over misdemeanor trials at the Criminal Justice Center in downtown Los Angeles.
