FONTANA - Armed with high-school Spanish and a commitment to his Mormon faith, Steven A. Mapes spent two years in Ecuador 27 years ago. He returned to California with tapestries, wood carvings and a knowledge of the Spanish language that would serve him well.
"There's nothing like survival," Mapes said recently in his chambers at the Fontana Courthouse. "You go, you learn."
