LOS ANGELES - William Highberger, the son of a Presbyterian minister from a small town in New Jersey, was sent to boarding school on a scholarship at age 14.

He was a fish out of water.

"The other kids were more sophisticated and much richer," Highberger said. "It was very tough being away from home at 14. I learned how to be self-reliant. I learned how not to cry.
