FULLERTON - Michael A. Leversen faced five days in custody for contempt of court.

It was the early 1980s, and Leversen was defending a man charged in a jewelry store robbery.

Midway through trial, Leversen asked the court to relieve him as counsel. A conflict had arisen, Leversen explained, that prevented him from adequately representing his client.
