BAKERSFIELD - John Lua, half-Hawaiian and half-Samoan, grew up in a large, extended family that included six older siblings and dozens of aunts, uncles and cousins.

In their Polynesian culture, Lua said, family always came first, "protecting your family, standing up for them."
