RIVERSIDE - Mark E. Johnson was standing a few inches from a window in an Iraqi palace six years ago when he heard a sound "like a freight train coming in." A bomb hit the ground 20 feet outside the window but failed to detonate.

That was one of several times Johnson - then on active duty as a U.S. Army judge advocate in a civil affairs battalion in Baghdad - said he had close brushes with death.... (continued)
