OAKLAND - In Homer's epic poem the Iliad, the heroic warrior Achilles responds to a speech by Odysseus with a memorable line: "Hateful to me as the gates of Hades is that man who hides one thing in his heart and speaks another."
That sentiment guides the jurisprudence of U.S. Bankruptcy Judge William J. Lafferty 30 years after he read it during his college rhetoric studies.
