VENTURA - Judge Gilbert A. Romero's path to the bench of the Ventura County Superior Court began in an unlikely place: the barrio of La Colonia in Oxnard.
From the 1970s onward, the neighborhood was beset by drug trafficking and gang violence. His father was mostly absent, and because of his mom's struggles with addiction, Romero was raised by his grandmother who toiled in the fields.
