SAN DIEGO - Joan Lewis and her buddy Bill Dematte had it all figured out. As soon as they passed the State Bar Exam, they would join forces as First Amendment rights lawyers.

It didn't work out that way.

The day the State Bar gave them the thumbs up, Dematte was diagnosed with a terminal illness.
