LOS ANGELES - Judge Elaine Mandel handled some catastrophic personal injury and devastating wrongful death cases during her 17 years as a plaintiffs' lawyer.

It was the sexual abuse of children by some Catholic priests, however, that weighed the heaviest on her.

"Those cases just get [to] you, in a truly visceral way that other cases don't," she said recently.
