HAYWARD - They talked often about the law and his interesting criminal cases. But it wasn't until his father's death in 2002 that Commissioner Charles Smiley III realized the mark his dad had made on the legal community in Dayton, Ohio.
"At his funeral, many young lawyers came and shook my hand," Smiley said, recalling that most told him his father helped them.
