SAN LUIS OBISPO — A former newspaper reporter who progressed to telling stories to jurors as a prosecutor, part of Judge Craig Van Rooyen’s audience nowadays is people who’ve gotten into trouble.

“I can sometimes help explain what procedures are and tell them, ‘Hey, this is what can happen; if you want to talk to the DA, sometimes the DA will make this offer,’” he said. “I kind of demystify the system for them a bit.”
