FREMONT — Commissioner Pelayo A. Llamas Jr. enjoys getting his hands dirty, whether it’s repairing his motorcycles or riding them off-road.

“Freeways are boring,” he joked.

Pelayo finds asphalt so pedestrian, in fact, that he partakes regularly in Moto Melee, an 850-mile trek through the back roads of California. Only motorcycles manufactured before 1971 are allowed to participate.
