SAN JOSE -- To simply call Judge Paul Bernal a San Jose local would be an understatement. He can trace his regional roots back to the late 18th century.

The judge said his ancestor, Juan Francisco Bernal, was an soldier on the Juan Batista de Anza expedition in 1775 that brought about 240 people from New Spain (now Mexico) to Alta California, where they established a fort known as the Presidio of San Francisco.
