In the 1970s, U.S. District Judge Ronald M. Whyte moved to San Jose from Southern California in part to get out from under the shadow of his father, Superior Court Judge James G. Whyte, and make a name for himself. More than three decades later, the junior Whyte is regarded as one of the nation's most knowledgeable judges on intellectual property law.
