Newsom's first nomination to a court of appeal and first African-American woman to serve that district. Appointed to San Francisco Superior Court in 2002 by Gov. Gray Davis. Previously was of counsel at Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP, served as a San Francisco County prosecutor from 1984 to 1997 and a San Mateo County deputy district attorney from 1981 to 1984.
