How did your military service mold you into the lawyer/judge you are today?

In the military I learned discipline, perseverance, service to others, and commitment to principles bigger than myself. These qualities served me as government lawyer helping to make my community a better place to live. They continue to serve now in private practice and as a volunteer with the California State Guard providing legal assistance to deployed service members.

What does it mean to you to be a veteran?

Being a veteran means that I had the honor and privilege to work alongside some of the best men and women this nation has ever produced.

Army / Active 1999-2004; Inactive 2004-2007 served / Captain / Operation Iraqi Freedom

How did your military service mold you into the lawyer/judge you are today?

Military service provided me with the discipline and mental fortitude to help me overcome adversity and stressful situations. On the bench, as in life, we all face obstacles. But it is how we deal with and overcome those obstacles that helps us to build character and mold us into better people and professionals.

What does it mean to you to be a veteran?

I am a proud combat veteran. My time in the service and in Iraq taught me to appreciate life, and everything that comes along with it. It also taught me to never take anything for granted, especially family and children. Children are only young once, and to make sure to enjoy every minute you have with them.

United States Marine Corps / 1999-2003 served / Sergeant /

How did your military service mold you into the lawyer/judge you are today?

My grandfather served as a Filipino soldier with the US Army in World War II and my parents immigrated from the Philippines in the 1970's. My service in the Marine Corps was my way to honor their sacrifices in order to provide a better life. The Marines helped me improve my work ethic and provided me with an ability to handle difficult situations under stress. Most importantly, my time in the Marine Corps galvanized my commitment to serve my community, whether that be on a local or national level.

What does it mean to you to be a veteran?

To be a veteran is to be the ultimate public servant. It shows that a person is willing to put their entire life on the line to support their beliefs and support their community. It means honor and commitment to a cause greater than oneself.
