Facts
Plaintiff Lamar Hewitt was in an elevator when it collapsed in a building owned by Hanil Development Inc. Hewitt sued the Hanil d.b.a. Aroma Property, Target Elevator Corp., the elevator service company, and Sky Connection Inc. alleging negligence and premises liability. Hanil and Target admitted liability, leaving the issue of damages to the court.
Damages
Hewitt sought damages in excess of $1 million for future medical care, plus $2.2 million in economic damages, and $15 million for non-economic damages.
Injuries
Hewitt claimed he sustained permanent neurological damage to the pudental nerve, peroneal nerve, and sural nerve as well as damage to various lumbar nerve roots. Hewitt further claimed suffering from herniated discs. He underwent chiropractic treatment, physical therapy, cold laser therapy, and psychotherapy. Hewitt claimed his injuries resulted in multiple physical disabilities, including impotence and severe emotional distress.
Result
The jury awarded Hewitt $107,447.
