In 2003, when another MUNI employee observed defendants accessing the boxes during non-working hours, MUNI investigators commenced surveillance of defendants. Defendants were seen checking fareboxes in early morning hours before the start of their shifts and on their days off. Based on these observations, MUNI reported defendants to the San Francisco Police Dept. Defendants were subsequently arrested.
Defendant Camilleri's vehicle and home were searched. Police found MUNI cashboxes and cardboard boxes containing $38,000 in cash and 8,000 MUNI tokens with a face value of $8,400.
