Facts
The Department of Justice filed a lawsuit on behalf of disabled movie-going patrons against AMC theaters under the Americans With Disabilities Act alleging that their stadium-style theaters failed to provide persons who use wheelchairs with comparable lines of sight to those of other moviegoers.
Result
The chain agreed to a settlement that will improve the movie-going experience for people who use wheelchairs and their companions at AMC theaters nationwide. All stadium-style theaters opened by AMC after entry of the decree will be constructed with accessible seating near the middle of the auditorium. The theater chain has also agreed to make sure that a specified percentage of auditoriums provide wheelchair spaces and companion seating in its stadium section. AMC will move wheelchair seating from the front row to locations further back from the screen to ensure that patrons who use wheelchairs also enjoy an unobstructed view of the screen. Further, lines of sight will be enhanced and accessibility will be improved for wheelchair-bound patrons.
